Mating Information for Boxers

Boxers are large dogs reaching heights or 22 to 25 inches and weighing up to 70 pounds on average, though some boxers will weigh up to 100 pounds. They are an athletic breed needing daily stimulation. The boxer originated in Germany in the 19th century and descends from the Bullenbeizer and Barenbeiser and were later crossed with the mastiff and bull dog. The breed is recognized from all major purebred organizations, including the American Kennel Club. Breeding the boxer requires time, finances, supplies and sufficient knowledge of the breed.
  1. Cost

    • The cost of two pure bred boxers will set you back thousands of dollars. As of 2011, the cost could reach $4,000 each. Veterinarian bills for both parents and puppies can also set you back hundreds to thousands of dollars, but pet insurance can help offset bigger vet costs. Dog food must be purchased for all dogs and puppies. You will want high quality food to promote a healthy gestation for the female and healthy pups. Toys and bedding for the dogs are another financial consideration. It is also estimated that 20 to 40 percent of puppies do not survive, so keep that in mind when calculating cost and profit.

    Time

    • The mating process can take time between the dogs. When the female is in heat, watch both carefully to correctly calculate the due date range. The female's gestation period is approximately six weeks and she may require additional care in her pregnancy. The puppies also require care around the clock for at least a few weeks. They may need bottle feeding or frequent vet visits if they are sickly.

    Knowledge

    • Important information when breeding boxers including their health risks, the female's heat cycle, boxer bloodlines, color patterns of boxers, how to groom boxers and how to keep them safe and healthy. If you are registering with the AKC, you should have a working list of what they will look for in the annual exams.

    Laws and Contracts

    • Check your local laws about breeding and the amount of dogs you are allowed to have. Some areas will limit the amount. Look into the laws for puppy sales. Many states require that the puppy be 8 weeks old before selling. Every puppy sale needs a signed contract between buyer and seller. This protects both parties from lawsuits and unnecessary blame.
