What Is a Mini Bulldog?

Mini bulldogs are a hybrid breed between the bulldog and pug. Also called bull-pugs, they are popular pets due to their reduced size. They are considered to be loyal and loving, with a temperament similar to a bulldog. The mini bulldog is not recognized by the American Kennel Association, so it is important to choose a mini bulldog carefully.
  1. Features

    • Mini bulldogs will only grow to the size of a pug dog, making them ideal pets where space is an issue. Males stand to about 14 inches, and females stand to about 13 inches tall. They have squat legs, dense bodies and a more prominent nose than the bulldog. The head of the mini bulldog is large compared to its body and the coat is smooth and short and can have the coloring of either a pug or a bulldog.

    Temperament

    • Sharing a similar temperament to the bulldog, mini bulldogs are loyal and sociable. They get along well with children, making them great family dogs. They are protective and gentle, and require regular exercise. Mini bulldogs are not suitable as guard dogs as they are more likely to greet strangers than bark at them. They can be strong-willed and stubborn, but are not ordinarily vicious.

    Health Issues

    • Hybrid breeds are susceptible to health issues from both parent lineages. Mini bulldogs are less likely to suffer from the same respiratory problems as the bulldog due to its protruded nose. Other issues include pneumonia, whelping difficulties and hip and knee problems. The risk of developing these hereditary health problems can be reduced through the choice of a good mini bulldog breeder.

    Choosing a Mini Bulldog

    • Choose a reputable and responsible breeder when looking for a mini bulldog. Ask about the lineage of the puppy to give you the best chance of finding a mini bulldog with a good temperament and one that is free from health problems. Miniature English bulldogs are an alternative option that share similar features and size with the mini bulldog but they have purebred lineage.
