Types of Poodle Breeds

The poodle was originally bred in Germany to assist hunters in water retrieval of hunted fowl, such as duck and common loons. Poodle dogs are known for being highly active and easily trainable. According to the American Kennel Club, there are three types of poodle breeds that are officially recognized and are designated to enter dog shows.
  1. Non-Sporting Miniature Type

    • The American Kennel Club-designated Non-Sporting Miniature poodle was once used to hunt truffles because of its keen ability to root them out by scent. Poodles of this type must be between 10 to 15 inches in height at the front shoulder. They often enter dog shows that judge the grooming preparation of their elaborately trimmed coats. Hair length can range from medium to long with a high level of daily grooming needed to maintain it properly.

    Toy Type

    • The toy type of poodle is the smallest breed. It has been a historically popular choice to be trained for dog trick shows at circus performances. A poodle that is less than 10 inches at the front shoulder is classified as a toy type and most often has medium length wiry hair which tangles and mats if left ungroomed. Toy type poodle groomers often shave across the length of the Poodle's torso, sides and belly while leaving its fur boots, neck and facial hair and a tail bob to reduce matting problems.

    Non-Sporting Standard Type

    • The oldest poodle breed type is the non-sporting standard type. This is the highly intelligent poodle type which once accompanied German duck hunters to the shore and was easily taught fetching skills. This type stands over 15 inches tall at the front shoulder blade. Standard poodles often have extremely long hair, which is styled, straightened or trimmed dramatically when groomed, and long, angular hind legs that are shaved for show dogs to highlight muscle definition.

    Characteristics Shared by All Types

    • Purebred poodles of all breed types, without any other breed mixed in, are never parti-colored. They are always bred as solid colors such as white, black, light brown or gray. Poodle coats are always wiry, whether long or short, but can be straightened by grooming. The hypoallergenic coat of the Poodle breed makes this an excellent companion or show dog for owners who have respiratory ailments or extreme allergies.
