How to Find a Neverland Landseer

The Newfoundland is a large breed, weighing between 120 and 180 pounds. It's an exceptionally gentle breed, perhaps the most gentle of all breeds. Newfies excel at water rescue, cart pulling and general labor. The breed comes in solid colors of grey, black and brown, as well as the black-and-white coloring, called Landseer. The dog, Nana, in "Peter Pan," was modeled after author J.M. Barrie's own dog, Luath, also a Landseer Newfoundland. Although "Peter Pan" is set in Neverland, a Newfoundland Landseer is rarely referred to as a "Neverland Landseer" despite the author's ties to the breed. It can be a little difficult to locate a quality breeder, but considering that some of the breed's heritable health problems are fatal, it is well worth the effort, time and cost of buying a puppy from an ethical, high-quality breeder.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit the Newfoundland Club of America's web page for puppy buyers for information about buying a Newfoundland puppy, the requirements for breeders, such as health clearances and limited registration requirements and how to locate good breeders (see References). Ask every breeder the same questions and record each answer. Each breeder should provide written documentation of the health clearances they get before breeding their dogs. Ask about the socialization of the puppies in detail.

Read the information on the Cedar Valley Farms website, and ask when it will have Newfoundland puppies available (see References). It has much information about Newfs on its site, and adheres to proper ethics as breeders. Contact the staff at 314-437-5172 or by email at [email protected]. There is a placement application required before buying a puppy from this breeder (see Resources), and that is another sign of an ethical breeder.

Contact Timbermist Newfoundlands to ask when it will have puppies available. Find information about its puppies and breeding program on its website, and contact it at 218-525-2020, or by email at [email protected]. Timbermist asks that interested puppy buyers complete the Home Evaluation Form see Resources.

Talk to Renaissance Newfoundlands about its puppies. This kennel also requires completion of an evaluation form (see Resources). There is plenty of information about its puppies on its website, as well. Contact the staff at [email protected] or 585-591-0962.

Consider adopting a Newf from Newfoundland rescue. Pure-bred dogs end up in shelters and rescues, along with mixed breeds. The Newfoundland Club of America maintains a rescue network (see Resources).
