The Best Breeds to Mix With a Pomeranian Chi

Archaeologists disagree on the date dogs became man's best friend, but evidence shows dogs were domesticated at least 10,000 years ago. From the time wolves evolved into today's canine, humans have been breeding dogs to obtain different sizes, shapes and temperament. The American Kennel Club only recognizes purebred dogs but a new trend of designer dogs has emerged. By breeding purebred Pomeranians and Chihuahuas, the best characteristics of each breed surfaces.
  1. Pomeranian and Chihuahua

    • The Pomchi is between 5 and 12 lbs. with long or short hair, erect ears and a rounded, apple shaped head. All colors, either solid or mixed, are acceptable. The registry for hybrid dogs, the American Canine Hybrid Club, has 500 designer breeds listed, including the Pomchi. The designer breeds start with two purebred dogs but subsequent generations are often bred by mixing a Pomchi with either another Pomchi or a different small breed dog.

    Mixing Different Breeds of Dogs

    • Since all dogs are from the same species, mixing different types of dogs is acceptable. In fact, many dogs are mutts and contain several different breeds in their ancestry. But mating dogs of similar size is the best way to maintain the idea of the Pomchi. A few dozen toy and other small dogs are good matches to mix with a Pomeranian and Chihuahua.

Breeds to Mix with a Pomchi

    • The Pomeranian Place website lists 31 purebred dogs to mix with a Pomeranian or a Pomchi and their new designer names. Depending on the characteristics desired in the puppy, choosing long-haired breeds like the Papillion or American Eskimo will likely result in a dog with long, soft hair. If you want short hair, breed a Boston terrier or Jack Russell terrier to the Pomchi.

    Characteristics and Grooming

    • Like all small dogs, the Pomchi should be socialized when it is 12 weeks old to prevent behavior issues when grown. Dog owners often overlook teaching the small dog to be around strangers and other dogs. Overprotecting any pet can result in a poorly behaved dog.

The long-haired Pomchis need to have their fur brushed often to get rid of tangles. The Pomchis are healthy dogs with few known health issues. As with most small dog breeds, Pomchis are susceptible to dental disease and luxating patella, where the kneecap slips out of alignment, causing pain and limping.
