Energy Level
-
Dogs can score in either the low, medium or high category for energy level when rating breeds. Excitable dogs are great for active, older preteens; younger, calm preteens may prefer a more docile breed. Bulldogs and Miniature Schnauzers tend to score high on an energy level scale. Golden Retrievers and Labradors usually score medium, while German Shepherds and Welsh Corgi's generally score low.
Size
-
The size of the dog is crucial for many reasons. Your living space should complement the needs of the animal and its size. Small dogs may be too fragile, while large dogs may accidentally injure a child. Dogs can score in either the small, medium or heavy category for size when rating breeds. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a small-to-medium sized dog that is very easy going and perfect for apartment living. Beagles, on the other hand, are friendly, medium-sized dogs that are natural-born hunters. So, they prefer plenty of yard space for running and scavenging. The Collie is a large-sized dog that is very gentle and predictable; however, collies were originally bred as herding dogs, so an abundance of roaming space is required.
Temperament
-
Dogs are either dominant, balanced or submissive. Before selecting a breed, you need to examine which type of temperament is ideal for your preteen. Brittany Spaniels are very submissive dogs that behave perfectly around strangers and other animals. Newfoundlands are balanced; they are gentle, kind, patient and very protective of children. The Bull Terrier, branded as an aggressive animal, tends to be very dominant. Despite their reputation, these dogs were originally bred to be companion dogs; while they are rambunctious and protective, they are also loving.
Hypoallergenic Dogs
-
Ten percent of Americans are allergic to dogs. However, you can choose a dog with a non-shedding coat to maintain a low allergy environment at home; even an allergic preteen can enjoy being a pet owner. In addition to selecting a hypoallergenic breed, you can also prep your house. Provide regular grooming. Wash hands daily. Consult your vet to keep your home healthy and allergenic-free.

Good Dogs for Preteens
Consider your preteen's lifestyle before deciding upon a dog breed. You should also determine the energy level, size and temperament that you desire from the dog. You will also want to teach your preteen responsibility and acceptable behavior around a dog before purchasing the animal. After gathering and acting upon the necessary information, you will find yourself fully prepared to welcome just the right dog into your home.
