Instructions
Decide which combination of Puggle you wish to create. First-generation Puggles are created by breeding a Beagle with a Pug, but second-generation Puggles can be created by breading a Puggle with a Beagle, a Puggle with a Pug or even two Puggles. Only first-generation Puggles will be recognized by the American Canine Hybrid Club.
Determine which specific characteristics you wish to create in the resulting pups. For example, smaller Puggles, called "pocket Puggles," can be created by choosing smaller parents, specifically by using a Beagle that is less than 11 inches tall.
Choose a purebred Beagle and purebred Pug to breed. Usually a female Beagle and a male Pug are used since the Beagle is the larger of the two breeds. Although Puggles cannot be registered with the American Kennel Club (AKC), your Puggles should be created from two AKC-registered parents if you are breeding them to sell.
Ensure that the breeding dogs are the proper age. The AKC requires that they be 7 months old and less than 12 years old.
Follow standard dog breeding techniques such as determining when the bitch's cycle is at the right point, watch for signs of pregnancy -- such as nipple swelling and a growing stomach -- and make sure that the bitch receives an extra feeding each day. Prepare a whelping box and get the mother used to it, then watch for signs of labor.
Raise the pups for at least 8 weeks to provide sufficient time to wean the pups from their mother. Separation prior to 8 weeks often leads to social problems down the road.
How to Breed Puggle Pups
Puggles are a wildly popular new designer breed dog. They seem to have become the dog of choice for young celebrities and have acquired four-figure price tags. Puggles were first created fairly recently by breeding Pug dogs with Beagles. They are popular because they are small dogs with a friendly temperament. They are considered a designer dog rather than a mixed breed because they were created deliberately in hopes of combining the best characteristics of each breed. In this case, the Puggle combines the playfulness of the Pug lapdog with the hunting instincts and energy of the beagle.
