The Temperament of a Yorkie Poo

While Yorkie Poos generally have similar temperaments, some aspects or extremes of your Yorkie Poo's temperament might partly depend on what percentage of poodle and what percentage of Yorkshire terrier the dog is. Common percentages for Yorkie Poos are 50 percent poodle and 50 percent Yorkshire terrier, 25 percent of one and 75 percent of the other, and second-generation Yorkie Poos (where the parents are themselves some mix of Yorkie Poos).
  1. Eagerness

    • The poodle part of Yorkie Poos lends intelligence and the Yorkshire terrier part brings some obstinacy. A Yorkie Poo who is 75 percent Yorkshire terrier might be more stubborn than a Yorkie Poo who is 25 percent Yorkshire terrier. Whatever your Yorkie Poo's temperament, just be patient. Your dog will eventually learn toilet training and other commands you are trying to teach.

    Watchdog

    • Yorkshire Terriers are keenly aware of their environment and bark at noises and suspicious behavior. A Yorkie Poo who is more Yorkshire Terrier might be louder and bark with less provocation than a Yorkie Poo who is more poodle. Keep this in mind especially if you have sensitive ears or sensitive neighbors.

    Friendliness

    • Both poodles and Yorkshire terriers love people, so it is no surprise Yorkie Poos do too. Yorkie Poos get along well with other dogs as well. They enjoy company so much that if they are left alone, they are prone to depression. Constant barking, chewing and destroying items are ways Yorkie Poos manifest their unhappiness. Yorkie Poos are good with children, but monitor the dogs with small children because Yorkie Poos can get overly frisky.

    Upbringing

    • How you raise your dog helps shapes its temperament. For example, if you spoil your Yorkie Poo and do not socialize him with other dogs, he might be a barking bundle of nerves when he sees strange people. If your Yorkie Poo is mostly poodle, poodles are faithful and may take time to warm up to new people. The Official Poodle Guide website states that poodles have a gift for sensing moods; if you're depressed, your poodle might mirror your mood. Some poodles are extreme barkers as well.
