About Blue Doberman Dogs

The American Kennel club only recognizes four unique colors of Doberman Pinschers, which are black, red, fawn and blue. Although blue is an accepted color for Doberman Pinschers, the dogs are most commonly found in black or red. There are more differences between the types of Doberman Pinschers besides the coat color.
  1. Cause of Coat Color

    • The blue color of the coat in some Doberman Pinschers in caused by a gene in one or both parents. Because the gene is recessive, adult Doberman Pinschers may have the gene that causes the trait of the blue coat color in Doberman Pinschers, even if they are not blue Dobermans. This can make it extremely hard for breeders to ensure a puppy will be born with a blue coat. The blue coat color is a diluted form of the black color commonly found in Doberman Pinschers.

    Health Problems

    • Blue Doberman Pinschers are susceptible to the same types of health problems that other Doberman Pinschers suffer from, including bloat, cancer, chronic hepatitis and hypothyroidism. However, blue Doberman Pinschers also suffer from severe skin and coat problems. The disease, Color Dilution Alopecia, is commonly found in dogs with diluted colors. It can cause a severe thinning of the dog's coat, sometimes even to the point of balding.

    Behavioral Problems

    • Because blue Doberman Pinschers are rare, they can be expensive. Many breeders work very hard to produce the blue dogs to make more money. According to Gentle Doberman, many breeders often breed too many dogs in an attempt to get one with a blue coat. As a result, kennels get overcrowded, and individual dogs may suffer from a lack of attention. A blue Doberman with severe emotional problems may be aggressive toward people, be timid around other animals or be extremely difficult to train or housebreak.

    Care Issues

    • If you cannot find a blue Doberman at your local Humane Society or pet adoption agency, choose one from a responsible breeder. Ask the breeder about the living conditions of puppies and what he does to ensure the puppy's health and emotional well being. Talk with your veterinarian for specific food and medication recommendations to help keep your blue Doberman's coat looking beautiful and healthy. Choose a dog food brand with omega fatty acids.
