Golden Retrievers
-
Golden Retrievers make excellent pet companions. They are well-known for their affection, intelligence, loyalty and docile nature -- essential characteristics to have in a dog that will be living with a toddler. The breed is also easy to train and handle.
Labrador Retrievers
-
Labradors are a popular pet choice around the world. Not only are they gentle and intelligent but they also are patient, which is essential, since children tend to be very physical with animals. Care has to be taken when training them, though, because it's easy to hurt their feelings, and they don't tend to forget easily.
English Bulldogs
-
An English Bulldog may not seem like an ideal puppy to have around a toddler, but its tough, rugged appearance is quite deceptive. The breed is naturally affectionate and calm, and unlike other dogs, Bulldogs prefer being indoors, making them good companions for children. The fact that they're also quite strong in the shoulders and limbs means that they have self-protection against a toddler's occasional rough handling.
Poodles
-
One advantage of Poodles is that they stay at a reasonable size for a toddler to manage. However, Poodles must be carefully trained. Although they're known for being intelligent, playful and even-tempered, they're not naturally accepting of very small children, so a poorly trained poodle can be dangerous around a toddler. If a Poodle puppy is well trained, though, behavior issues easily can be avoided.

The Best Puppies for Toddlers

Some smaller breeds often are not the most suitable to have around children because of their quick temper and general dislike of being handled by kids. The breeds listed below tend to be good with children.
