Types of Doodle Dogs

Poodles are often bred with other dog breeds to create hybrid dog mixes, which often have "doodle" on the end of their names. Poodles are considered a good breed to mix with other dog breeds because they are non-shedding dogs, which make them a good option for people with dog allergies. Mixing a poodle with another breed can give the hybrid mix some of the looks and personality aspects of both dogs.
  1. Labradoodle

    • The Labradoodle is a common poodle hybrid mix that is created by breeding a Labrador retriever with a standard poodle. Labradors are known for being smart, loyal and kind dogs. Although Labs commonly have short, straight fur, some Labradoodles can have longer, more curly coats. Although they have more hair than common Labs, they don't shed nearly as much as Labrador retrievers do, because they are mixed with the non-shedding poodle.

    Goldendoodle

    • Goldendoodles are a pairing of poodles with another popular dog breed, the golden retriever. If you choose to purchase a goldendoodle, be aware that these dogs can be either 50 percent golden retriever and 50 percent poodle, or the offspring of two goldendoodles. These dogs can have either a long, curly coat or smoother, straighter hair.

    Irish Doodle

    • The Irish doodle is a cross between the Irish setter and the poodle. Some people choose to have Irish doodle dogs because they combine two breeds that have few issues. Irish setters don't have many negative genetic tendencies and also are low-shedding dogs. As a result, Irish doodles are healthy dogs that are smart, loyal, playful and energetic.

    Pyredoodle

    • The Pyredoodle is a designer hybrid dog that is the result of breeding a Great Pyrenees dog with a standard poodle. While many people love Great Pyrenees dogs for their loyal, gentle and affectionate temperaments, their large size can be a problem for some families, as they can reach up to 100 pounds. They also have long coats that shed year round. Breeding a Great Pyrenees with a poodle will create a smaller dog with less of a shedding problem.
