Types of Pomeranians

Pomeranians, also known as poms or pom-poms, are a small toy dog breed known for their fox-like faces and fluffy fur. This animated breed is also known for its high energy, animated activity and companionship. When choosing a Pomeranian, look into the different types to make sure you find your perfect pom.
  1. Male or Female

    • The first difference among Pomeranians is gender. When picking out a Pomeranian, one of the most important aspects is to pick a male or female. Either way, if you are not planning on breeding your Pomeranian, it is a good idea to get your dog spayed or neutered. This will help to control the pet population and avoid any unwanted puppies in the house.

    Hair Length

    • It seems as though all Pomeranians have long fluffy hair. However, hair length can make a big difference in Pomeranians. Most poms have long hair and should be kept that way. Short-hair Pomeranians can often be found in local classified ads but these Pomeranians are typically not purebreds or they may just not be show dog quality.

    Colors

    • Pomeranians come in many different colors. A chocolate Pomeranian typically has a medium brown color to its hair. A beaver-colored Pomeranian can have a mix of white, gray, brown and black fur. Sable-colored Pomeranians have silver, gold, gray or brown hair with black tips. A red Pomeranian has a reddish-orange color to its hair. Brindle-colored Pomeranians have a base color of red or orange with strong black cross stripes. Blue Pomeranians are actually black, although there is blue pigment on the dogs' nose and eyes.

    Miniature Poms

    • Although "miniature" or "tea cup" Pomeranians are popular to some, there is no such recognized breed. Miniature Pomeranians are often just labels that breeders put on smaller Pomeranians who fall on the low end of the accepted weight scale. Pomeranians themselves are already a "toy" dog breed.
