How to Find a Mate for My Samoyed Dog

As with any pure breed canine, you need to be sure that you're mating your Samoyed with the best possible stock. Proper breeding provides you with better assurance that any puppies produced will be more likely to meet with American Kennel Club breed standards. Good breeders understand how to match dogs to produce the best quality puppies. The better the pedigree, the higher the price you can ask when selling puppies. If you don't do your research and make sure you've found a healthy pedigree bitch or stud for your dog to mate with, you could produce puppies that suffer from health problems.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact the American Kennel Club and the Samoyed Club of America to enquire about breeders in your state.

    • 2

Contact any leads you get and place advertisements on websites like K9Studs.com, Breedersusa.com or in your local classifieds to solicit potential mates.

    • 3

Arrange to meet with the owners of any potential mates to discuss the dogs' health and bloodlines. It's important to make sure that the animal you choose is in the best condition possible to give you the best chance of securing a healthy litter. If sourcing a bitch, you should ideally be looking for a dog between ! and 8 years old that has whelped fewer than six litters. A stud should ideally be aged between 7 months and 12 years.

    • 4

Look the dog over carefully for signs of any defects or medical conditions.

    • 5

Request documentation of all vaccinations and medical treatment the animal has had and look for any congenital of hereditary disorders. You should ideally be able to see documentation for the medical history of the potential bitch or stud's parents as well.

    • 6

Ask to see the animal's American Kennel Club registration. If the dog isn't registered, ask why.

    • 7

Take both the bitch and the stud to a veterinary surgeon to have both dogs tested for inherited conditions before mating. Although the Samoyed is generally a healthy breed, it can be prone to hip dysplasia, aortic stenosis and cataracts among other conditions. A vet can check for some inherited diseases by studying both dogs DNA profiles. It may be expensive, but could bring up something the owner's of your dog's mate have failed to mention.

Satisfy yourself that you've found the right animal for your dog to mate with based on the information you're reviewed and arrange details of where and when your Samoyeds can mate.
