Colors of Pomeranian Breeds

Pomeranians are a small breed of dogs with teddy-bear faces and thick double coats. Their coats are thickest round the neck and chest area, and Pomeranians come in a large range of colors. The color of a puppy can change completely when it becomes an adult. When adults are shown, the classes are generally split into three color divisions: red, orange, cream and sable; black, brown and blue; any other color, pattern or variation.
  1. Red, Orange, Cream and Sable

    • Red Pomeranians have a deep dark reddish-orange coat that is all one color, while orange Pomeranians are a light golden tan-orange color. Cream is an off-white color that is like the color of the cream in coffee. Sable Pomeranians may look brown or gray from a distance. Close-up you will see that a sable Pomeranian has a coat where the tips of the fur are black. The underlying color can be red, orange, brown or gray.

    Black, Brown and Blue

    • Black and brown Pomeranians are exactly as the name describes and the dog is either a solid black or brown with no other colors. A blue Pomeranian is a uniform dull black color, but the nose has blue coloring. To tell whether a dog is black or blue you check the nose, as black Pomeranians have black noses and blue Pomeranians have blue noses.

Any Other Color, Pattern or Variation

    • Other colors include Pomeranian dogs with tan or rust coloring above the eyes and on the muzzle, throat, forechest and feet. They also include white, chocolate, lavender, sable, brindle, merle and parti-colored dogs. Brindle has a base color of red, orange or golden tan with strong black cross stripes. Merle has a solid base of red, brown or black with light blue, grey or red mixed in so that the dog has a speckled appearance. Parti-color is white with any other color.

    Three Basic Pomeranian Parti-Colors

    • The three basic types of parti-colored Pomeranians are known as Irish, Piebald and Extreme. An Irish Parti Pomeranina has a white collar, chest and legs, and frequently a white blaze on the face. A Piebald Parti Pomeranian has about 50 percent white and 50 percent another solid color. An Extreme Parti Pomeranian is at least 80 percent white with spots of other color on its back.
