Characteristics of Long-Haired Dachshunds

Longhaired dachshunds are one variety of the dachshund breed. Dachshunds are small, long dogs that were originally bred in Germany as hunting dogs. Longhaired dachshunds are similar to other dachshunds in temperament, size and body structure, but vary slightly in their coat length and colors. These characteristics set them apart from other dachshunds.
  1. Temperament

    • All dachshunds, including longhaired dachshunds, are friendly and outgoing dogs. Since they were bred to be working dogs, hunting burrowing animals as well as animals above ground, they are energetic and eager to work or play. This breeding also gives them keen senses, and makes them brave and bold. They are also smart dogs. It is sometimes thought that the longhaired dachshund is calmer or easier going than other dachshunds.

    Size

    • Like other dachshund types, the longhaired dachshund can be found in two sizes. These sizes are known as standard and miniature. Standard longhaired dachshunds weigh between 16 and 32 pounds. Miniature longhaired dachshunds weigh 11 pounds or under after they have reached one year in age. These two sizes are shown in separate class divisions.

    Body Structure

    • Longhaired dachshunds have short legs and a long body. They carry themselves low to the ground. They have long heads that narrow toward the snout, long legs and long tails. The ears are also long and hang down on either side of the face. Despite their strange body appearance, dachshunds, including longhaired dachshunds, are strong and well-muscled. They are compact, and move quickly and smoothly.

    Coat

    • Three types of dachshund coats exist. They are the smooth coated dachshund, the wirehaired dachshund, and the longhaired dachshund. The longhaired dachshund's coat is, obviously, long and has a very slight wave to it. It is longest near the underside of the body, as well as along the underside of the neck and the front of the dog's chest. The backs of the legs and the ears sport even longer hair. The underside of the tail is also fluffy. Longhaired dachshunds can be found with a variety of coat colors. Solid colors, such as reds, creams, chocolates and grays are common, but two-tone coats, as well as brindle, sable or dapple patterns, can also be seen. Brindle is a dark striping over the dog. Sable is a darker coat tone that covers a lighter red coat. Dapple is a pattern of light-colored areas laid over a darker base coat. Black, blue, fawn and tan colorations can also be found.
