Mutt Facts for Kids

Mutts, also known as mixed breeds, are a combination of two purebreds or other mixed breeds. One of the breeds in the combination is generally more dominant than the other making it a one-of-a-kind dog. For example, a Labrador retriever may be mixed with a German shepherd resulting in a dog that may look only like a German shepherd. One of the most important aspects when considering a mutt as a pet is determining whether you want a lapdog or a playmate, and who in the family will be the primary caregiver. For example, if the child in your family will be walking the dog, then a smaller dog may be more suitable.
  1. Personality

    • Mutts are generally friendly, loyal, loving and usually good with kids. The temperament of a mixed breed dog really depends on the breeds that it is mixed with and whether the dog came from a shelter, a breeder or from a family. Purebreds are more predictable in respect to their specific breed, so it is important to do research on the type of breeds you are interested in and behaviors exhibited before purchasing a mutt. The biggest advantage of a mutt is having a combination of breeds, allowing you to have the ideal pet that you can play with.

    Cost

    • Dog ownership, over the course of a pet's life, is costly. The biggest advantage of mutts is that most are in shelters, making them very affordable. In most cases, they come with initial vaccines and are spayed or neutered, further saving money. Larger shelters and rescue leagues may also have veterinarian services set up at a discounted rate for people whom have bought pets from them. Sometimes you can get a mutt for free from a family that may be moving and cannot take the pet. Saving money on upfront costs gives you some extra money for dog toys and treats.

    Selection

    • The options are endless for selecting the perfect pet for your family. Shelters are full of pets, giving you the advantage of picking out a pet based on such things as age, sex, size, shape and color. Size can be somewhat unpredictable; if you are kid looking for a lapdog, get the advice of a veterinarian before purchasing. Another advantage is that you can take your time in selecting your pet; shelters have a constant turnover of dogs. Some breeders are now breeding designer mutts, where you can pick the kinds of dogs that you want combined. Mutts are less prone to diseases that are common to a specific breed, so this may be a good option.

    Saving a Life

    • The most rewarding aspect of purchasing a mutt form a shelter is saving a life. Shelters are overrun with animals, so giving a pet a good home may prevent it from being euthanized. Shelter dogs can have behavior problems such as abandonment issues or the inability to get along with other animals or children, be sure so spend a lot of time playing with the animal and get the advice of a professional before buying. In addition to shelters, look for mixed breeds in newspapers and online; many people will give them away free or for a very low fee to a good home with kids.
