Things You'll Need
- Undercoat rake
- Slicker brush
- Standard dog comb
Instructions
Attach a lead and collar to your Samoyed. If necessary, use a full-body harness for more control. Instruct your dog to lie down across your lap, then place her leash under your leg to keep your hands free.
Brush your dog on one side using the undercoat rake, directing your strokes from his head to his tail, toward the direction of hair growth. Work with one small section at a time to loosen fur from his undercoat. Rake all the way down to his skin in each section.
Repeat this process on the other side of your Samoyed's body, then do the same on her back and belly.
Brush your Samoyed again using the undercoat rake, this time directing your strokes from her tail to her head, opposite the direction of fur growth. Repeat on both sides, her belly, and her back.
Brush each side of your Samoyed using the slicker brush, again concentrating on one relatively small section at a time. Aim the strokes of your slicker brush in the direction of fur growth, from his head to his tail. The slicker brush will eliminate remaining loose undercoat fur, and it will de-tangle the dog's outer coat. Repeat again on the other side.
Fluff your Samoyed using a standard dog comb to give her outer coat a polished, feathered look. Use quick, upward strokes on every side of the dog's body, including the belly, back and tail. This will also eliminate any remaining tangles.
Repeat this process as needed to eliminate tangles and matted fur. Most Samoyeds need to be brushed at least several days per week, particularly during spring and fall, when they are likely to experience shedding.
