How to Care for Puggles

Puggle care requires a daily commitment. These fairly small dogs are a cross between pugs and beagles and possess many of the strengths and weaknesses of both breeds. Reputedly sociable and good with children, this recently developed crossbreed is gaining popularity in the US, according to Puggle.org.

Instructions

    • 1

Feed your puggle according to your veterinarian's directions. Avoid excessive feeding, as puggles can be prone to obesity.

    • 2

Walk your puggle on a leash or play with it in a fenced yard for 15 to 30 minutes once or twice daily. Give your puggle lots of fresh water. The puggle's short muzzle and hair make it ill-adapted to extreme temperatures. Watch for signs of overheating or breathing difficulties in hot weather; bring your dog indoors if it becomes lethargic or pants or drools excessively. Dress your puggle in a sweater or coat in cold weather.

    • 3

Brush your puggle's coat once a week. Brush its teeth and wipe its face daily. Bathe it once a month to prevent dry skin. Trim its nails monthly. Follow any additional recommendations from the breeder or veterinarian.

    • 4

Take your puggle to the veterinarian yearly for a checkup and immunization. Give it preventative anti-parasite medication as prescribed by your vet. Watch for red eyes and ears; these can be signs of infection.

    • 5

Train your puggle using treats as rewards. Give only a small piece each time to prevent obesity. Be consistent and use rewards when housebreaking as puggles can be difficult to housebreak.
