What Is the Origin of Chihuahua Dogs?

Chihuahuas are the oldest dog breed in the Americas. They were once considered sacred in Mexico, where the breed originated. The modern Chihuahua is very different from the early dogs, which were long-haired and mute.
  1. Pre-Columbian Times

    • It has been speculated that Chihuahuas are descended from the Techichi, a Mayan canine. The history of the Techichi goes back only to the ninth century. However remains have been found in the graves of Mayan Emperors that go back to the fifth century. At that time, Chihuahuas were a larger, mute, long-haired species. The clergy and aristocracy considered them sacred.

    Early Colonial Years

    • Christopher Columbus mentioned the dogs in a letter sent to the king of Spain. It is speculated that the Mexican breed was crossed with small Chinese dogs that were brought over by the conquistadors. This may be true and would account for the smooth-coat varieties and the fact that modern Chihuahuas have voices.

    The Modern Breed

    • The breed was rediscovered in 1850. The small dogs created quite a stir and varieties were bred for color variations and different fur lengths. In 1904, the breed was recognized by the American Kennel Club. It has remained popular ever since.
