Bladder Infections in Chesapeake Bay Retrievers

Chesapeake Bay retrievers, along with other retriever dog breeds, are prone to getting bladder infections. Their love for food causes them to eat more, and therefore to void more. Their thick coats, especially under the tail, may sometimes trap fecal matter.
  1. Significance

    • Bacteria from fecal matter enter the body through the genital openings, travel up the urethra and settle in the lining of the bladder. There the bacteria reproduce rapidly, causing symptoms.

    Causes

    • Female Chesapeake Bay retrievers are more prone to getting bladder infections because their genital openings are larger than males.

    Symptoms

    • Symptoms of a bladder infection include cloudy urine, blood in the urine, straining to urinate, urinating or dribbling urine in the home, and constantly licking the genitals.

    Warning

    • Symptoms of bladder infections are also similar to other problems like urinary stones, parasites or cancer. It is important to get a firm diagnosis from a veterinarian in order to get the right medication.
