Instructions
Feed the puppy at least four small meals a day. According to The Puppy Dog Place, Chihuahua puppies need to follow the rule of eating small meals often because they have a fast metabolism that burns through food quickly and a small stomach that doesn't allow them to eat much. Adults are fine with two meals. Puppies need four or more small meals throughout the day.
Avoid using a large bowl for water. Like any puppy, Chihuahua puppies might try climbing in a large bowl to drink and might fall in the container. Unlike larger breeds, Chihuahua puppies risk drowning because of their small size. Use a small bowl. Fill it up regularly to prevent the puppy from climbing into it and to allow the dog to drink the water without trouble.
Prepare for low blood sugar. Because Chihuahua puppies have a fast metabolism, the risk of low blood sugar is high. Prepare by having an appropriate paste or food item that the puppy can eat if blood sugar drops too low. Talk to a vet about the best options for the specific type of Chihuahua puppy.
Crate train the puppy. At 10 weeks old, Chihuahua puppies are old enough to crate train, which is the fastest way to housebreak the breed. Place the puppy in the crate throughout the day to get the puppy familiar with the crate. Always take the puppy outside immediately after taking the puppy out of the crate.
Clothe the puppy. Chihuahua puppies are easily chilled due to their small size and thin coats. If the weather is cold, put the Chihuahua in a sweater or similar clothing item for added warmth.
Take the puppy to the vet whenever there are health problems. Chihuahua puppies are delicate, when compared to other puppy breeds. Taking the puppy to the vet at the first sign of illness or problems can save the puppy's life.
