The Characteristics of Shih Tzus

Owning a pet is a large responsibility. When looking for a new dog, it can be helpful to research the breed to make certain that their temperament and characteristics suit the owner's needs and capabilities. Shih Tzus are among the most popular breeds of small dogs and are known for their size and cuddly appearance.
  1. Self Confident

    • Although they are a small breed, one of the most common characteristics among Shih Tzus is their abundance of self confidence. Shih Tzus carry themselves in a very proud and somewhat arrogant manner and can be a little stubborn when challenged unless otherwise bribed. As a result of their self confident demeanor, most Shih Tzus don't respond to change well and require consistency when being trained and disciplined.

    Hard to Housebreak

    • Since Shih Tzus are small and have small bladders, it can take longer to housebreak them than other dogs. When Shih Tzus are puppies, their bladders are still developing as they grow so it can take anywhere from four to six months to accurately housebreak them. Doggie diapers can be used during the process to assist in eliminating accidents and can be found easily at pet stores.

    Alertness

    • Shih Tzus are known to be a little possessive and extremely aware of their surroundings. Since they don't respond well to change, they tend to monitor their area and bark when they hear sudden or unfamiliar noises. Shih Tzus are also people dogs and stay on alert when other unknown dogs are present, and can take a while to warm up to them.
