Tear Stain Removal Tips for a Bichon Frise

Like many small dogs, the Bichon Frise generally has a happy, loving temperament and love adults and children. Bichon Frise dogs have soft fluffy coats that are a variation of white or apricot. Their fur is hypo-allergenic, making this dog a popular choice among allergy sufferers. One harmless condition Bichon Frise dogs experience is a staining of the fur underneath the eyes from normal eye watering, which can be caused by allergies or exposure to bacteria.
  1. Feeding

    • Reduce potential allergens or bacteria that could cause tearing, as these are issues that cause the eyes to tear. Give the Bichon Frise water and food in stainless steel bowls to reduce bacteria from plastic bowls and consider giving the dog high-end food that is specially formulated for small dogs. Feed the dog 1 tsp. of natural, plain yogurt several times a week to improve the dog's immune system by increasing the amount of live active cultures in the dog's stomach.

    Water

    • Consider giving the dog bottled water if your tap water is high in mineral content, or use a filter to create cleaner water. You can purchase filters at most grocery stores, drug stores or hardware stores. Provide fresh water daily, and consider adding 1 tsp. apple cider vinegar to the water to balance the pH and prevent bacteria formation.

    Tear Stain Removal Products

    • Purchase tear stain remover or tear stain removal wipes from the pet store that can be used to wipe away tear stains once they have formed. There is also a powder version that can be sprinkled on the dog's food to prevent the mineral and bacterial imbalance that causes tear stains. If you do not have a tear stain removal product handy and you see the eyes tearing, dampen a soft cloth or facial tissue and wipe the eyes. Keeping the area clean and free of tears at all times will help prevent the stains from forming.
