The Temperament of an English Bulldog Puppy

The English bulldog has long been misunderstood. Contrary to their gruff appearance, they are among the gentlest dog breeds, and are even good with small children. As puppies, they already display their adult traits plus a healthy dose of playfulness.
  1. Attitude

    • English bulldogs retain their playful puppy behavior until about 2 years of age. They are happy, unpredictable, clown-like pups with high energy levels that will decrease as they age.

    Trainability

    • English bulldogs are said to be stubborn, but breeders say they simply prioritize differently. They can be very determined and persistent, and their trainer needs to exhibit these same traits.

    Intelligence

    • Their high levels of curiosity are a hallmark of intelligence, and they are known for sensing their owners' moods. Even at rest, the bulldog takes notice of everything that's happening around it, and may alert its owners when something is out of place.

    Aggression

    • English bulldogs are non-aggressive by nature, but are protective of small children and animals. Even as puppies, they have been known to intervene when a child is scolded by parents.

    Habits

    • Bulldogs snore and drool excessively, even as puppies. They crave human companionship, and according to the Bulldog Information Society, will do anything to make you laugh.
