Why Are Dalmations Fire Station Mascots?

Although Dalmatians have been used for hunting birds, killing rodents and as shepherds, the breed is most often associated with firehouses and firetrucks. Dalmatians fell into this role for a few unique reasons.

    • Stagecoach drivers began using Dalmatians to prevent nighttime horse theft due to the fact that the breed is highly compatible with and protective of horses. This work earned the breed the nickname of "coach dogs."

    Intelligence

    • Dalmatians are alert and intelligent dogs that are capable of filling most any role. The breed is highly trainable.

    Physique

    • Sleek and energetic, Dalmatians were able to keep up with fire coaches and wagons during even the longest of trips.

    Instinct

    • Dalmatians have a strong guarding instinct. The breed not only prevented horse theft, but also worked to guard against firehouse intruders.

    Common Misconceptions

    • A common misconception about Dalmatians as firehouse dogs is that the breed is naturally deaf, which prevents the dogs from becoming bothered by loud noises, such as sirens. While deafness is a health concern, not all Dalmatians are deaf.
