Canary Dog Behavior

The canary dog, also known as the Presa Canario, is a breed originating from the islands of Tenerife and Gran Canaria in the Canary Archipelago. It is known for its superior guarding abilities and noble temperament.
  1. History

    • The Presa Canario is a large molosser breed with a history as a working dog. Its main duty consisted of being a loyal guardian and cattle dog.

    Misconception

    • Because of its history as a guardian, people often believe that the breed shouldn't be approached by strangers. Presa Canario dogs should be watchful and alert, but accepting of a friendly stranger.

    Behavior

    • Calm and confident, Presa Canario dogs are loyal and kind to their family. They tend to develop a strong attachment with the owner.

    Considerations

    • Because the Presa Canario breed has been used in the past for keeping stray dogs away from cattle and was used in dog fighting, this breed is not trustworthy by nature toward other dogs and animals.

    Warning

    • Because the Presa Canario is a powerful breed that can have dominant tendencies, it is not a dog breed for everyone. It requires strong leadership, socialization and lots of obedience work.
