English Bulldog Problems

The English bulldog's appearance can be somewhat intimidating, but it is actually known for being a very affectionate and dependable animal. However, even though it is described as being a good family dog, it is not recommended for a novice dog owner, because it can present very specific problems that require extra attention.
  1. Cold and Heat Sensitivity

    • Bulldogs tend to spend their energy quickly by playing and running full-throttle and then coming to a screeching halt by collapsing on the floor for a long rest. They do not make good jogging or bike riding companions, because they do not tolerate excessive exercise, heat or cold very well; because of this, they need to spend the majority of their time indoors.

    Breathing Problems

    • Most bulldogs have breathing problems that include loud snoring while sleeping and/or excessive panting after minimum exercise. The flat facial structure restricts their air intake, and many of them suffer from additional breathing difficulties caused by an elongated soft palate that, if not corrected surgically, can cause sleep apnea or suffocation.

    Hip and Elbow Dysplasia

    • According to bulldoginformation.com, English bulldog problems often include hip and elbow dysplasia resulting from the abnormal development of the joints in a young dog. Almost all dysplastic dogs are born with normal hips and elbows, but often as the puppy grows, the soft tissues that surround the joint start to develop abnormally. This is believed to be genetic but could be caused by other factors.

Dogs will alter their running or walking and may even start to limp from the increased stiffness and pain. As the loss of muscle tone progresses, the dog may even need assistance in getting up.

    Skin Irritations

    • Dermatitis, commonly known as an inflammation of the skin, occurs in bulldogs because of rubbing of skin and trapping of moisture in the excessive skin folds or wrinkles, which can turn into a bacterial skin infection. Dermatitis is often found in the skin fold areas of the tail, lip and face; in order to prevent this condition, bulldogs need to have these areas cleaned daily.

    Inability to Swim

    • Bulldogs have unusual body proportions and because of this, their short legs cannot support their condensed, heavy bodies in the water. Some owners have had to endure the tragic loss of their bulldog after leaving it unattended in a pool area before finding out that it lacked the ability to swim.
