Snoodle Puppy Information

Designer dog, mixed breed or simple mutt, the snoodle dog has a loyal following of dedicated fans who swear the happy dog is the perfect companion. The snoodle, also known as a schnoodle, is a cross between a schnauzer and a poodle. The dog can range in size from from 6 to 75 lbs., depending on the size of the parent dogs.

    • Poodles are classified as toys, miniatures and standards. Schnauzers have the classification of miniature, standard or giant. When breeding a poodle and schnauzer to make a snoodle, you must take size into account. Due to the wide range of the parents' sizes the snoodle can be as small as a toy which stands 10 to 12 inches at the shoulders and weighs only 6 to 10 lbs. or a miniature which stands 12 to 15 inches at the shoulders and weighs 13 to 20 lbs. Breeding a giant schnauzer with a standard poodle creates a standard sized snoodle that weighs 20 to 75 lbs. and stands 15 to 26 inches at the shoulders.

    Temperament

    • Snoodles have fun-loving, happy personalities. They are willing to please their owners and they adore children. They also offer extreme devotion which is a characteristic of the schnauzer. The larger standard sized snoodles often exhibit a different personalty then the smaller snoodle because their parent dog, the giant schnauzer, has a different personality then other schnauzer sizes. The giant schnauzer exhibits a protective, dominant personality which is why they often excel as police dogs. The dominant personality is often passed down to the snoodle which means that the owner of a standard snoodle must have a firm hand and control.

    Health Considerations

    • When purchasing a snoodle, evaluate the poodle parent lines . The poodle has a genetic predisposition to hip dysplasia and retinal atrophy which it can pass down to its offspring.

    Hypoallergenic

    • Both the poodle and the schnauzer have hypoallergenic coats that are non-shedding. This is desirable characteristic for people who are allergic to dogs. The coat of the snoodle does grow like its parents', so the snoodle requires daily brushing and grooming every six to 10 weeks.. Many snoodles have a soft, woolly coat like the poodle but others have wiry fur like the schnauzer. Coat colors are the same as the poodle.

    Good and Bad

    • The snoodle has a few characteristics that people often consider undesirable such as digging and hunting small rodents. These tendencies come from its schnauzer parent. The snoodle often exhibits stubbornness and a mind of its own. It will often exhibit a preference for one person over other members of the family, unlike the poodle parent that tends to adore everyone equally. The snoodle enjoys riding in the car and playing fetch and often excels at agility.
