Yorkshire Terrier
-
A dynamo in a tiny body, the Yorkshire terrier is a bundle of energy. Brave and determined, this dog seems unaware of its size, often challenging much larger dogs. Commonly referred to as "Yorkie," the breed is highly intelligent but sometimes can be difficult to house-train if it does not have an owner that assumes a leadership role. Without firm, gentle guidance, the dog sometimes becomes unsure and suspicious, leading to behavioral problems. The Yorkie is a naturally sweet, loving dog and can be good with children if she has a consistent owner who has taught her boundaries. The long, silky, blue and tan coat of the Yorkshire terrier requires regular grooming to remain free of tangles. Considered one of the hypoallergenic breeds, Yorkies are ideal for allergy sufferers. The Yorkshire terrier weighs less than 7 lbs. when fully grown.
Silky Terrier
-
Weighing about 10 lbs., the silky terrier is a cross between the Australian terrier and the Yorkshire terrier. Possessing a happy, even temperament, the silky terrier fits wonderfully into family life. The dog is curious and energetic, and needs lots of quality time with his family. The silky terrier loves long walks and games of fetch to challenge his constantly active mind. This breed has the same blue and tan coat of the Yorkshire terrier that requires frequent brushing.
West Highland White Terrier
-
Commonly called "Westie," the West Highland white terrier, is spunky, self-confident and determined. The Westie loves to be with his owner and usually likes to travel. The breed generally likes kids and other dogs. He tends to want to be dominant and needs an owner who will supply firm, gentle and consistent leadership. Without this, the dog may become unsure and snappy. The coat of the West Highland white terrier is bright white and dense. The breed needs daily brushing and regular professional clipping. Daily walks help to keep this energetic breed stimulated and prevent behavioral problems resulting from inactivity. Normal weight for the Westie is 13 to 22 lbs.
Boston Terrier
-
According to the American Kennel Club, the Boston terrier is called "the American Gentleman" because of his debonair appearance, sweet nature and the fact that he makes a perfect house pet. The coat is short, smooth and shiny, in colors of black, seal or brindle, marked with white. The Boston loves being with his owner and is a loyal, gentle companion. The breed comes in three class sizes--less than 15 lbs., 15 to under 20 lbs. and 20 to less than 25 lbs. The Boston terrier loves children and requires minimal grooming and exercise. Indoor play and short walks are sufficient.
