How to Take Care of Wiener Dogs

Wiener dogs, or dachshunds, are small dogs that were originally bred in Germany to hunt badgers. Their task of chasing badgers down their holes meant that dachshunds were bred long and thin, giving them their characteristic wiener dog appearance. These affectionate, intense little dogs are popular house pets and are particularly good with children and cats.

Instructions

Give your dachshund puppy his own crate and blankets. This gives the puppy a place to call home and feel comfortable, and will also give you a tool for house training the puppy. Equip the crate with blankets, and wrap a heating pad in a blanket to turn on low at night and in cold weather. Dachshunds are particular fans of warmth.

    • 2

Feed your dachshund high-quality puppy food three times a day. Look for food that is specific to small breeds. As a dachshund puppy gets older, restrict feedings to twice a day and consider switching mature dachshunds to low-fat food, as these dogs are prone to obesity.

    • 3

Put out water for your puppy. Use shallow dishes that your dachshund can reach easily and refresh the water consistently.

    • 4

Take your puppy out for regular walks for both exercise and house training. Walk the dachshund puppy once an hour for both exercise and house training. Walk the puppy once an hour to give him plenty of opportunity to go to the bathroom outside. Always walk your puppy as soon as he wakes up and just before you put him to bed.

Play with your puppy regularly. Dachshunds are social and affectionate, and require lots of personal attention. Some favorite dachshund games are burrowing in blankets and tug-of-war.

Take your puppy for his inoculations starting at 3 months. These are a series of three sets of shots that cover issues like rabies and DHLP, and will protect your puppy from sickness.
