Appearance
-
Short legs support the English bulldog's stocky body. Extra skin on his head falls in folds around his face, creating a look that some consider either ugly or cute. They have large square jaws with an under bite. The dog's short, smooth coat may be any color or a combination of colors. Most are less than 14 inches in height but weigh nearly 50 pounds.
Grooming
-
This breed does shed and needs occasional brushing. They seldom need bathing. However, you will need to wash their face daily to clean under the skin flaps and avoid irritation or dermatitis.
Unpleasant Characteristics
-
Some English bulldogs have a tendency to drool incessantly. They are very untidy when eating and they often snore noisily. Any change in diet may produce flatulence. Although all puppies want to chew, normal puppy chewing extends for two or more years in this dog. Some chew nearly all their lives. They will need to have that tendency directed to acceptable objects to avoid destruction.
Disposition
-
English bulldogs have retained the courage shown when bull fighting. The Dog Owner's Guide explains that breeding has retained the good qualities of these dogs and developed a gentle disposition. They now show little aggression. They are dependable, affectionate and very good with children. They are also stubborn and consequently need training and strong leadership. They love to eat, sleep and play with the family and are very loyal.
Energy Level
-
Puppies are very energetic, slowing as they age. The English bulldog does not need a yard or much exercise. However, he does need a daily walk, not just for the exercise, but also to ward off boredom. These dogs adapt well to apartments or small homes and to older or less active people.
Health
-
Because of facial structure, some English bulldogs have difficulty breathing. Their eyesight may be poor. They do not tolerate heat and may actually have heatstroke in a hot car or overly warm room. Alternately, they do not tolerate cold either. The dogs often have problems with knees and hips and with skin infections. Average life expectancy is eight years. Most English bulldogs do not swim and many have drowned when left alone near water. Vet Info lists the English bulldog as one of the breeds susceptible to cherry eye and suggests surgical repair.
Birth
-
Because of their large heads, English bulldogs often become stuck in the birth canal. According to Pet Education, dystocia, or difficult delivery, often occurs. Many breeders schedule surgical birth in order to avoid problems.

English Bulldog Characteristics
Ancestors of the modern bulldog fought and guarded bulls in the 16th century. Two centuries later, bull baiting was a betting sport in England. The bulldog's popularity dwindled when bull baiting was banned. In attempting to preserve them, breeders developed the English bulldog. Because of its distinctive characteristics, the English bulldog is now a popular breed, serving as mascot for many British organizations.
