Havanese Dog Breed Information

The Havanese is a sturdy little dog that loves being part of a family. They are odorless and non-shedding. Although considered a toy breed, this dog is not fragile. They like nothing better than to play rough and tumble games with the children of the family.
  1. History

    • According to the American Kennel Club, the Havanese is the only dog that is native to Cuba. He is designated as the national dog of Cuba. One of the Havanese's functions in Cuban families is to herd the family's chickens and geese. They were often offered as a treasured gift to friends. The Havanese had nearly become extinct until the mid 1970s when a Colorado woman became interested in the breed. She worked diligently to re-establish the Havanese breed. Today, there are nearly 4,000 registered Havanese in the U.S. alone.

    Function

    • Originally known as a lap dog to the wealthy, the Havanese is now primarily considered a great family dog that also is known to be skilled as a watchdog. They love to herd and have no problem keeping small flocks in line.

    Appearance

    • The Havenese sports a long, wavy, silk-like coat. The hair is thick, which acts as an insulator against the intense tropical heat of his native Cuba. Colors of the coat include white, gold, champagne, silver, chocolate, blue, black and cream. All colors are accepted as standard by the American Kennel Club. The Havanese stands 8 ½ to 11 ½ inches high.

    Characteristics

    • Classified as one of the hypoallergenic dogs, the Havanese is ideal for those with allergies to dogs. The breed also loves kids. They have a naturally affectionate nature and prefer to be with their owners as much as possible. They are intelligent and train easily. Energetic and active, they require regular exercise. The Havanese is an alert dog that will be quick to notice and warn of any approaching strangers. This curious breed loves attention and never misses a chance to perform and be noticed.

    Health

    • This breed is prone to an assortment of health problems. Most of the health concerns are the result of developmental abnormalities. The health issues most common to the Havanese breed include bowed or shortened forelegs, luxating patellas, cataracts and heart problems. Cancer is common in the Havanese.
