Labrador Retriever
-
Labradors take the top spot on the most popular dog breed list, thanks to their easy going, loyal personalities and intelligence. The coat of a Labrador is short, straight and thick, and may come in yellow, black or chocolate brown. Labrador Retrievers get along well with other animals, children and adults, making them ideal family pets. These dogs are very adaptable to their surroundings and live comfortably in small quarters, as long as they get some time outdoors each day. The Lab is an active, athletic dog with a life expectancy of 10 to 13 years. Common health problems in this breed include hip dysplasia, gastrointestinal problems, and eye conditions such as cataracts.
German Shepherd
-
Ever since Rin Tin Tin, German Shepherds have been an American favorite. Loyal and fiercely protective of their owners, German Shepherds are equally protective of their homes and family members. These dogs are athletic, intelligent and playful, so they're superb companion animals and perfect playmates for children. The German Shepherd is a large breed of dog, with a medium-length coat. Coat colors include black and tan, brown, gray, even white (though white is undesirable for showing the dog). Some common health problems suffered by this breed are hip dysplasia, skin problems such as dermatitis, and heart disease. Life expectancy of the German Shepherd is approximately 13 years.
Yorkshire Terrier
-
Yorkshire Terriers, or Yorkies, are a toy breed of dog, meaning that the Yorkie is tiny at 6 to 7 inches tall, only weighing up to 7 lbs. Yorkshire Terriers require very little space due to their small size, however, as they are energetic dogs they require daily interaction and playtime with their owners. These dogs adapt well to their surroundings and are extremely good watchdogs. Yorkies need structure, socialization and discipline to establish that you, not they, are the pack leader. They often are not recommended for small children (though they are fine for older, well-behaved children). The coat is long, requires grooming and is usually a black and tan color. Life expectancy is 12 to 15 years, and common health problems include tooth and eye problems, breeding problems (females have trouble birthing puppies) and digestive problems.

Most Popular Pet Dog Breeds in the USA
Purebred dogs are some of the most popular pets in America. From tiny Chihuahuas to enormous Great Danes, most everyone is familiar with one dog breed or another, and everyone has their favorites. The American Kennel Club (A.K.C.) is responsible for maintaining breeding and breed specific standards for registered dog breeds (a sort of stamp of approval), and comprises an annual list of the top U.S. dog breeds. The top three dog breeds on this list in 2009 are covered here.
