Epilepsy in Bulldogs

Bulldogs are happy, mellow dogs that make good family pets. They are not vicious or aggressive and form excellent bonds with children. As a bulldog owner, it is important to be aware that bulldogs are prone to certain health conditions such as epilepsy.
  1. Features

    • Bulldogs have short faces, and solid bodies with short legs. They range from 12 to 16 inches in height and usually weigh 40 to 50 pounds.

    Epliepsy

    • Epilepsy is a disorder that affects the central nervous system's ability to communicate with the brain. This disorder results in occasional seizures that usually last a couple of minutes, but can be life threatening.

    Bulldogs &Epilepsy

    • Bulldogs are genetically prone to epilepsy. Epileptic seizures are a symptom of this genetic disorder and are not a result of the way a dog is treated or raised.

    Treatments

    • Epilepsy in bulldogs can be treated with anticonvulsant medication. The medication will help manage your bulldog's seizures by reducing their frequency and severity.

    Considerations

    • Due to their short faces, bulldogs can also have difficulty breathing and are prone to snuffling, sneezing and overheating. Breathing difficulties may be exacerbated during a seizure.
