How to Register Your New Dog Breed

Registering a new dog breed involves a serious time commitment, willingness to study breed development and a tolerance for paperwork. Registration with all organizations requires a demonstrated expansion of the gene pool to prevent genetic health conditions, records and first-person accounts of breed developments and problems and a complete guideline to standards developed for your new dog breed. This process may take decades and requires a legitimate following in the new dog breed.

Instructions

    • 1

Organize and prepare all of your records about breeding in electronic format using a word processing program and Microsoft Excel. This should include a complete history of breed development, genetic information about the creation of the breed, current breeders' contact information, first-person observations of dog behavior and intentional changes to the breed. You must also provide strict breed standards and photographs of multiple dogs demonstrating the breed standard.

    • 2

Register your breed with an international or domestic rare breed organization. While each organization is different, you will likely be required to submit photos, a written breed history and detailed information about breed standards and developments.

    • 3

Enroll in the American Kennel Club (AKC) Foundation Stock Service (FSS). FSS enrollment is required before the AKC will recognize your breed. FSS also helps you professionally maintain and manage your records.

    • 4

Create and track your following. Your breed must have a demonstrated public and breeder interest to qualify as a new breed. Track this by recording monthly numbers of email and social network subscribers and maintaining copies of personal communications stating interest in owning or breeding the type dog you have developed.

    • 5

Receive AKC Board approval. After enrolling in FSS, this can take at least 18 months. To receive approval, you should stay active in the community you've generated and provide updates to the AKC via the FSS program.
