Instructions
The first line of defense in preventing Dachshund back problems is to help your pet maintain a healthy weight. Don't let your Dachshund get fat! Avoid offering table scraps and over feeding. Obesity will cause excess strain on many systems in a dog's body, not just the spine.
Keep your Doxie active buy taking sort walks and playing gently. Avoid rough play and strenuous jumping which can cause wear and tear on the dog's joints and spine. Short walks will help with weight maintenance and keep your Dachshund from becoming too sedentary.
Many people think that Doxies should not go up and down stairs. This is actually ok. Don't let your Dachshund jump on and off furniture. This type of jumping can cause too much strain on the dog's back and can lead to injuries.
Keep a close eye on your Doxie and watch for the signs of back problems which include walking in a hunched-over position, refusing to get up, yelping and crying out when picked up, and refusal to climb stairs. If you notice any of these symptoms, consult your veterinarian.
