Papillion Puppy Information

"Papillon" is French for butterfly, and looking at a papillon's ears it's not difficult to see why they are given this name.

    Breed Classification

    • Papillons are toy breeds and were bred for companionship. Because they are small dogs, their litters generally consist of one to four puppies.

    Color

    • When puppies are born, it can be difficult to tell what color they will be. Tri-colored papillons may look black and white when they are born, and reds will become lighter as the puppy ages.

    Ears

    • Papillon puppies are born with their ears droopy. They will generally perk up around week 6.

    Coat

    • Papillons have a silky coat that requires brushing about once per week. The ear fringe is especially delicate and generally takes 1.5 to 2 years to grow out.

    Growth

    • Puppies will reach their full height by 6 months of age, though they can take up to 2.5 years to fully mature.
