About the English Bulldog

The English bulldog was once known as a tenacious bull-baiting dog. These days, it is best known as a loyal and affectionate family dog that gives out lots of love.
  1. Identification

    • Bulldogs are low in stature, broad, powerful and compact. They have massive heads, broad muzzles, and smooth, short coats, and they can weigh up to 50 lb.

    Colors

    • Their colors can include red brindle, other brindle, solid red, fawn, fallow or piebald. Black is not acceptable for show dogs, but a small amount of black in a piebald is somewhat forgivable.

    History

    • The name "bulldog" comes from the fact that the breed was used for bull baiting. The dogs were trained to grab the bull by its sensitive nose and hold it, rendering the bull helpless.

    Temperament

    • These dogs will guard their families with their intimidating look and courageous heart, but they are excellent with children due to their ability to form strong bonds.

    Considerations

    • Bulldogs are known to be enthusiastic chewers, and, without proper training regarding what is theirs and what is not, they can become very destructive. Their dominant nature calls for a calm, assertive leader.

    Health

    • Bulldogs are temperature sensitive and prefer to be indoor dogs.
