How to Take Care of a Teacup Yorkie

Small Yorkshire terriers, also called Teacup Yorkies, are coveted for their baby doll faces and soft, beautiful coats. With a little bit of care, a Teacup Yorkie can be a wonderful addition to any home. With proper care, you can expect your Yorkie to be a part of your family for the next 11 to 15 years.

Locate a vet specializing in or with extensive experience in dealing with small breeds. Small dog breeds tend to have health issues. They are more likely to have digestive problems and problems with their oral care. Finding a vet that is trained or has worked extensively with small dog breeds can alleviate heartache down the road.

Provide food for your Yorkie throughout the day. Many new owners don't feed their Teacup Yorkie enough because they fear she will grow larger than they want. A Yorkie will grow based on her genetics, and not feeding her enough as a puppy can result in health problems later. For the first few months, there is no such thing as a puppy overeating. No one brand of food is preferable to another.

Get your Yorkie a kennel. Dogs, like humans, need a space that can be safe for them. Getting a kennel gives your pup a place to go when she is scared, and a place to go when she is just feeling sleepy.

Get a small heating blanket or heating pad for the kennel. Place the pad underneath a folded-up blanket, to discourage the pup from chewing on it, and leave it on continually while the pup is little. Particularly in the wintertime, your pup is going to need something to help keep it warm at night. Teacup Yorkies are little dogs, and they don't generate body heat as well as larger dogs.

Groom your Yorkie regularly. Because of her long hair, your Yorkshire terrier will need to be brushed and bathed on a regular basis. Bathe your Yorkie once a week---at least once a month, depending on whether or not you plan on showing her. The important thing is that you bathe your terrier often, and brush her even more frequently.
