About Schnauzers

Schnauzers are a popular breed of dog as both pets and working dogs. They come in a variety of breeds and sizes and are known for their unusual facial hair, which gives them their distinct expression. From the giant schnauzer to the miniature schnauzer, these dogs have been kept in homes and on farms for centuries.
  1. History

    • The schnauzer is a dog breed that originated in Germany in the 1800s. The breed started with the standard schnauzer and was bred with affenpinschers, a breed of toy dog, to create miniature schnauzers. People wanted to be able to keep them as pets while still using them to hunt rodents in the home. The giant schnauzer came from standard schnauzers breeding with other large dogs, such as the black Great Dane.

    Types

    • There are three types of schnauzers: the giant schnauzer, the standard schnauzer and the miniature schnauzer. The names come from their sizes. The giant schnauzer stands about 26 inches tall on average and weighs 50 to 70 pounds. The standard schnauzer is about 18 inches tall with a weight of 40 pounds. Finally, the miniature schnauzer, the smallest of the bunch, weighs in at about 15 pounds and stands around 14 inches tall.

    Care

    • Keeping a schnauzer as a pet is a big responsibility, just like with any animal. Giant schnauzers cannot be kept in small homes or apartments. They need lots of room to run, and at least 1 hour of exercise a day. Miniature schnauzers are better suited for house pets, though they are still energetic. The standard schnauzer makes a good watch dog and is very protective of its owners.

    Class

    • Schnauzers are considered different things by different people. In America, the schnauzer is typically considered a terrier and kept as a pet, while in Germany they may work on a farm and thus be considered in the working class. They are especially skilled at catching rats and acting as guard dogs, thus also putting them in the working class. Miniature schnauzers are the most common breed kept for pets instead of work.

    Fun Facts

    • Schnauzers are considered to be hypoallergenic because they don't shed dander from their coat. They are very energetic and can be quite dominant, especially the giant and standard schnauzers. Typically their coats range between black and white, and can be solid or mixed. Because of their protective nature, they may not be as friendly with strangers as other breeds are.
