About Bullmastiffs

Bullmastiffs are a strong breed of dog, and were originally bred by crossing Old English bulldogs and English mastiffs. The breed is now common as a family pet and has a faithful, laid-back and affectionate yet protective demeanor. Bullmastiffs are excellent dogs if you are looking for a breed with courageous yet gentle instincts and behavioral patterns.
  1. History

    • The bullmastiff originated in England. The first recorded evidence of the breed was in 1795. Originally, bullmastiffs were used to look for and tackle poachers. Even though the bullmastiffs were seen as intimidating, they were specifically taught not to bite anybody. Nowadays, bullmastiffs generally are loving family companions and pets.

    Identification

    • Male bullmastiffs are between 25 to 27 inches in height and usually weigh from 110 to 133 pounds. As for the female side of the breed, they are usually between 24 to 26 inches in height and weigh in the 100-110 pound range. They have short, mildly rough coats and are usually fawn-, brindled- or red-colored, with notable black marks on their heads. Their heads are short and wrinkled, and they have intense, moderate-size eyes.

    Warning

    • If you are thinking about getting a bullmastiff, be aware of the health conditions they might face. Cancer is a common problem with them, and tumors, eyelid issues and hip dysplasia are also ailments they might get. They often get boils on their eyes and lips.

    Benefits

    • Bullmastiffs are convenient dogs because they can be kept in not only large houses, but in apartments, too. They do not require a lot of energy and space. Bullmastiffs are mostly inactive when indoors. However, it is important that the bullmastiff is taken on plenty of walks and gets ample exercise.
