How to Care for Komondors

Komondors, a kind of sheep dog, have a distinctive white, corded coat that looks like a mop. This large breed was originally bred in Hungary to herd and guard sheep. While quite lovable, Komondors can be domineering and difficult to manage. For this reason, they do not make good pets for families with small children or other small pets. Komondors are very protective of their families and make wonderful watch dogs. With the proper care, Komondors can live to be 12 years old.

Separate your Komondor's cords on a weekly basis. If the cords are not separated, they will become matted and almost impossible to separate. A Komondor's coat will naturally form these cords as it grows. As a puppy, the Komondor will not have cords, instead it will have a soft, wavy coat. The cords will become dirty, especially if your Komondor spends a lot of time outside, and should be washed when they look dirty using a mild shampoo and water.

Train your Komondor starting at an early age. Komondors were originally bred to be watch dogs and retain many of these instincts. This breed can become very aggressive with strangers. Komondors are typically eager to pleases and do well in obedience courses, especially when started at a young age.

    • 3

Feed your Komondor a nutritious dog food, being careful not to overfeed. Look for a food that contains meat, poultry or protein as one of the first ingredients. Komondors make efficient use of their food and typically do not need more than three cups of dry food per day.

    • 4

Walk your Komondor using a lightweight leash and collar on a daily basis. Komondors are typically very calm pets, but they still require daily exercise. A walk or time to play in a backyard or park is sufficient to keep your Komondor happy and in good health.

Brush your Komondor's teeth on a daily basis using a special dog toothbrush and toothpaste. Using the same technique you would use for your own teeth; clean all the teeth remembering to do both the fronts and backs. Do not worry about your Komondor ingesting the toothpaste; dog toothpaste is designed to be safe to swallow.
