How to Rescue a Pug in Texas

If you live in Texas and want to purchase a pug from a breeder, consider rescuing a pug instead. These short, compact, square-bodied dogs are known most for their flat faces and outgoing personalities. This breed typically has an even temperament and gentle disposition, which makes it a great choice for a family pet. Choose to rescue a pug in need and find a loyal and loving companion for the whole family.

Instructions

Locate a pug rescue organization in Texas. There are many pug rescue organizations in Texas, including Pug Hearts of Houston, Serenity Ranch Pug Rescue and DFW Pug Rescue Club, Inc. (see Resources for the links). Contact one of these organizations to inquire about their available animals. Talk to your local humane society to find out about pug rescue organizations in your city. They will be able to connect you to closest organization.

Fill out the adoption application. Most pug rescue organizations will require you to complete an extensive questionnaire. Be prepared to answer questions about your home, your family, your other pets, your reasons for rescuing a pug and your past experiences with dogs. Have a list of references available, including personal references, dog groomer references and veterinarian references. Most rescue organizations will require them.

Pay the required fee. Many pug rescue organizations require a fee to cover the expenses of the pug while in foster care. This includes the cost of food, relevant supplies, veterinary care, spaying or neutering and microchipping. Make an additional donation if you want to support the continued work of the rescuing pugs.

Prepare your home for your new pet. You might be rescuing an adult dog, but you are unfamiliar with the pug's history. Treat the situation as if you are bringing home a puppy. Move poisonous objects such as toxic plants, cleaning products, medicines and insecticides out of the pug's reach. Secure your backyard fence so that you can safely let your pug outside to eliminate.

Know how to care for a pug. Every dog breed is different and has unique needs. Pugs can have a variety of health issues, including problems with their eyes, hips and noses that can affect their breathing. Talk your vet about how to properly clean a pug's eyes, ears, teeth and facial folds or read about it online at Pug Village (see Resources).
