How to Identify a Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier

The soft-coated Wheaten Terrier is a confident, happy dog and is usually less aggressive than the other terriers, so she makes a good family pet. Although less aggressive, it should not be overly timid or shy. It is a working breed, so she does need daily exercise or a job to do.

Look at the general appearance of the soft-coated Wheaten Terrier. Males are 18 to 19 inches and females are 17 to 18 inches at the withers. It is a square-shaped breed, so the length from the withers to the rump is approximately the same as the height measurement. Males weigh 35 to 40 pounds and females weigh 30 to 35 pounds.

Make sure the head is proportionate to the rest of the body. The head is rectangular, so it is a bit long, but should not be coarse. The dark eyes can be brown or reddish brown and are medium sized, almond-shaped and are set quite wide apart on the skull. The small ears drop a bit forward. The black nose is fully pigmented.

Check that the medium length neck is strong but not throaty. It should widen gradually and blend into the well-angled shoulders. The front legs are rather heavily boned and lead to round, compact feet with deep pads. The rear sports stifles that are well-bent and low hocks. The rear feet are round and compact with thick pads. The docked tail is set rather high on the rump, and is carried up, but not over the back.

Notice the soft, silky coat. It is quite abundant and sports a gentle wave. It should not be woolly or harsh. The color can be any shade of wheat. Sometimes you may be able to see black, white or red guard hairs, but there should not be many. The ears and muzzle may have a bluish-gray shading.
