How to Identify a Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen

The Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen is a very happy and independent dog. These animals are extroverted and willing to please, and therefore make great therapy dogs. They are great with other pets and older children, but need to be watched around very young children due to their high energy and tendency to play-bite. They are outspoken dogs and like to howl and bray. They are also great tracking and hunting dogs that are mainly used for flushing and tracking rabbit.

Look at the general appearance of the Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen. This is a compact breed, but robustly built. It carries its head proudly, and its long eyebrows, mustache and beard give it a distinguished look.

Make sure the size and substance of this breed is correct. Males and females measure 13 to 15 inches at the shoulders. The measurement from the point of the withers to the point of the rear is a bit longer than the height of the dog, giving it a somewhat rectangular appearance. The Vendéen has a strong bone structure. The long neck is strong but not throaty. The muscular body is a bit longer than it is high, with a matching deep chest. The feet are protected with hard pads, and are slightly ovate. The medium-length tail is wide at the base and tapers to the end. It is carried up and shaped like a saber. When it is down, the tip should barely touch the hock joint.

Look at the proud head. It is twice as long as it is wide, but should not be overly large or coarse. The large eyes are dark and have an oval shape. They do not show white. The ears are covered with long, silky hair; they fold inward and have ovate tips. The leathers, when thrust forward, extend to almost the end of the nose.

Pet the rough, long coat. It feels harsh and covers a very thick undercoat. The coat is white with either orange, lemon, sable, black, tricolor or grizzle markings.
