How to Identify a Norwich Terrier

The Norwich Terrier is a fearless little dog that is very loyal, affectionate, intelligent and assertive. Even with a mind of its own, he is eager to please his family. He will bark when a stranger approaches. The Norwich Terrier is also good with children and other pets, as long as he is introduced and properly socialized as a puppy.

Instructions

Look at the general appearance of the Norwich Terrier. This is a stocky breed with a fox-type expression. She is also one of the smallest working terriers. This breed is no taller than 10 inches at the top of the shoulders. The distance from the shoulders to the point of the rear should be about the same as the height, giving this breed a square look. These dogs weigh about 12 lbs.

Look at the head--the small, dark eyes are oval-shaped and are far apart. The medium-sized ears stand up and are far apart. The muzzle is strong and shaped like a wedge. The fully pigmented nose and lips are black.

Make sure the medium length neck is strong and blends well into the angular shoulders. The moderately short body is compact and deep with a wide chest. The legs are made for digging and are short and powerful. The rear thighs are muscular and lead to low hocks. Front and rear feet are rounded and have thick pads. The tail should be just long enough to grab, and it is carried straight up.

Pet the wiry coat. It is a hard, straight coat and covers the undercoat. There is a protective mane around the neck and shoulders. It can be any shade of red, wheat, grizzle or black and tan. There should be no white marks on the Norwich Terrier.
