How to Identify a Siberian Husky

The most important characteristics of this breed is the medium size, well-balanced proportions and moderate bone structure. This breed should have freedom of movement and should have great endurance. The gait is smooth and looks effortless. The Siberian Husky is friendly and gentle, but very alert. This is an outgoing breed, but does not display possessiveness and is generally not suspicious of strangers and is generally not dog-aggressive. The Siberian Husky is an intelligent bred and has an eager disposition that makes him a good companion and a very willing worker.

      Look at the general appearance and size of the Siberian Husky. This is a medium-sized breed in the working dog category. Its moderately-compact body is well-furred, and the ears are erect. Its northern heritage shows in the brushy tail. The male Siberian Husky is 21 to 23 ½ inches and the females are 20 to 22 inches. The males should weigh about 45 to 60 pounds, while the females weigh about 35 to 50 pounds.

      Make sure the expression is interested, but friendly—even mischievous. The almond-shaped eyes are moderately spaced. They may be brown or blue, or have one of each color. The ears are medium-sized and triangular. They set high on the head and are thick, well furred and a bit arched at the back. They stand erect with the slightly rounded tips pointing straight up. The muzzle should be medium width and should taper gradually to the nose.

      Check the fore- and hindquarters. The upper arm is angled slightly backward form the point of the shoulder. The muscles and ligaments are firm and well-developed. The legs are moderately spaced and should be parallel and straight. The elbows are close to the body. When the Siberian Husky is view from the rear, the rear legs are moderately spaced and should be parallel. The well-defined hock joint is set low to the ground.

      Look at the double coat. It is medium length and gives a well-furred appearance. It should not be so long as to get in the way of a clean-cut outline. The undercoat is soft and dense, and will be long enough to support the outer coat. The outer coat hairs are straight and smooth. The Siberian Husky could be any color ranging from black to pure white. This breed has some patterns that are not found in other breeds.
