There are two types of Saint Bernard—the longhaired and the shorthaired. The longhaired type resembles the shorthaired type, except for the coat. It has medium length straight to slightly wavy hair. It is not curled or shaggy. The bushy tail has moderate-length dense hair.

Make sure the head is powerful and imposing. The skull is massive and wide, and should be slightly arched. The skin at the forehead forms wrinkles. They are especially noticeable when the dog is alert or at attention. The muzzle is short and should not taper. The height of the muzzle (at the root) must be greater than the length of the muzzle. The Saint Bernard has a very substantial nose with wide-open nostrils. The nose is always black. The ears are medium-sized and high set. They stand a bit away from the head at the base, then they bend to the side. The flap makes a rounded triangle. The eyes are set more toward the front of the face and are medium-sized, intelligent and dark brown. They have a friendly expression and are set somewhat deep. The tail is hung directly from the rump, and is long and heavy. It is a powerful tail that hangs straight down. It may curl at the tip when the dog is in motion. The male Saint Bernard should be no shorter than 27 ½ inches, while the females should be no shorter than 25 ½ inches.

Look at the dense coat. In the shorthaired dog, the coat lies smooth, and is tough, but does not feel rough. The thighs are a bit bushy. The Saint Bernard may be white with red or red with white colors. The red may be various shades—brindle patches with white markings. The Saint Bernard should have a white chest, white feet and the tip of the tail should also be white. The noseband, collar or the spot on the nape and the blaze may also be white.
