Pint-Sized Fun
-
The dachshund breed is characterized by two varieties, the standard and the miniature. In the United States, a dachshund is miniature if he's less than 11 pounds as an adult. Small in stature, miniature dachshunds have the heart and enthusiasm of a large dog, but of course, the miniature dogs need a little extra attention in handling. Small children should be supervised with the dogs to prevent injury due to roughhousing. Miniature dachshunds share nicknames with standards, including the wiener dog, sausage dog or just plain hot dog!
Coats and Colors
-
Dachshund coats offer something for everyone, in three textures and several color varieties. Coat types include smooth short-hair, wiry short-hair and long fringed hair. The smooth and wire varieties are like fox terrier coats, and the long coat resembles a setter. Colors include typical hound patterns: solid red, black and tan, and brindle; but dachshunds can also appear in cream, two-colored patterns and dapple, which is similar to a collie's merle pattern, and can be any color.
Working Dogs
-
Originally bred to hunt badgers in Germany, the dachshund got his name from this activity -- the German translations are "dachs" (badgers) and "hund" (dog). The breed has also been active in hunting small game, such as rabbits, and various rodents -- so protect your garden if you suspect gophers. Your dachshund will happily go to ground in search of trespassers! The dogs are officially classified as hounds, but they also share many terrier traits. They're a bit stubborn and feisty, and they can have a one-track mind when tracking prey.
Personality Plus!
-
Dachshunds are active dogs and moderately good watchdogs. A brisk walk around the block or a session of fetch can keep your dog exercised and happy. The dogs are happy in the city or in the country; they just want companionship. Miniature dachshunds' life expectancy is about 15 years, but obesity can threaten their hardiness. Overweight dogs are especially predisposed to disc disease and other health problems. Grooming requirements are minimal, but every dog needs the occasional brush and wash. Dachshunds are great conversation pieces, and you are certain to meet many people on walks with a mini -- so be prepared!
