Do Some King Charles Cavaliers Have Short Hair?

Many breeds of dogs appear in varying coat lengths. A couple of examples of these breeds are dachshunds and Chihuahuas. Cavalier King Charles spaniels, on the other hand, all have fur that is of medium-length. If you're looking for a naturally short-haired cutie, these English pooches don't fit the bill.
  1. Coat Texture

    • Cavalier King Charles spaniels' are known for their soft and sumptuous fur textures -- far from coarse and wiry. Their fur is straightish: no curling but occasionally some subtle waves. Certain parts of their coats are a little longer than others, specifically their tails, limbs, chests and ears. These parts all feature wisps of prominent fur that have conspicuously featherlike and frilly appearances.

    Coat Coloration

    • Although their fur only comes in one basic length, their coloring is a little bit more varied in nature, with four different basic color schemes. Some of them boast fur that is a combination of beige and black. Others have fully deep red coats. Some of them have fur that is a combination of black, beige and white. Many Cavalier King Charles spaniels' coats combine white and reddish-brown elements.

    Grooming

    • Cavalier King Charles spaniel coats are never as low-maintenance as those of some other breeds. If you have one of these dogs in your life, keep his coat looking healthy and tidy by brushing it a few times each week. If your pooch is in the middle of shedding, brush him a little more often in order to get rid of any lingering dead hairs. This prevents pesky and persistent knotting and tangling problems. Give their ear regions extra attention in the knotting department. Bristle brushes, pin brushes and slicker brushes are useful for maintaining their fur. Grooming appointments also are beneficial once a month or so. Although Cavalier King Charles spaniels don't have excessively long fur, trimming is mostly unnecessary.

    Other Physical Characteristics

    • Cavalier King Charles spaniels' lavish coats are undeniably distinct, but the dogs have a lot of other noteworthy physical traits, too. These small companion dogs generally weigh somewhere between 13 and 18 pounds. They are typically between 12 and 13 inches in height beginning at the tallest parts of their backs. Their bodies are a tad lengthy, providing them with graceful outlines. Their heads have slightly circular shapes. Their dark brown peepers are also circular.

    Trimming

    • If you think your Cavalier King Charles spaniel might feel better with a shorter cut, perhaps similar to those that cocker spaniels frequently get, go ahead and schedule the trimming appointment, as long as you don't intend to show the dog. Elderly dogs of this breed often grow especially heavy hair, especially if they've been fixed, so keep the idea in mind.
